With over 25 million vacuum cleaners being sold since 1955 when the company built the first household vacuum with a patented Cyclone system, Dirt Devil is the name for household vacuum cleaners and floor care.
The company was originally called "Royal Manufacturing" and was founded in 1905 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Their primarily niche was vacuum cleaners with metal cases until the early 1980s when they began selling the mass-market "Dirt Devil" line with plastic cases. Originally, the product's packaging was named "Royal Dirt Devil", but over the years "Royal" appeared in smaller and smaller models until it vanished entirely from the package. Today the brand is Dirt Devil®.
Under the rather anonymous corporate legal name "TTI Floor Care North America", the company decided to continue to manufacture the "Royal" line, although it is much more expensive but of a higher quality. TTI stands for Techtronic Industries, a Hong Kong-based firm and the makers of Hoover, Vax, and other vacuum cleaners.
